 🔴 Catastrophic floods across Spain

Valencia has been destroyed by floods. A year’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours in areas around the city, meteorologists said.

At least 158 people have died.

There will be more rainfall in Spain over the weekend, and as the ground is already saturated, there is more trouble ahead.

Why is climate change responsible for this?

Warmer air can hold more water, which is changing rainfall patterns. Clouds hold onto water for longer, and release more rain at once - meaning heavier rainfall and more chance of extreme floods.

Around 170,000 people in Europe are exposed to flood risk annually, and this number could grow to 480,000 by the end of the century.

Aviation is contributing significantly to the climate crisis.

In 2023, more than 6.7 million flights departed from European airports, emitting a total of 164.85 Mt of CO2. This is equivalent to the emissions of 80 million petrol cars in one year. Compared to 2022, this represents a growth of 11.2% in terms of number of flights, and 13.2% growth in terms of CO2 emissions.

We must travel better.
