💚 Europe-Africa rail link plans revived

Spain-Morocco tunnel ahead of FIFA World Cup, flights from France to be taxed €1bn more & Eurostar unveil new travel classes.

Hi, I’m Harry and it’s been 145 days since my last flight.

Really humbled from all the support shown for Tracks since the announcement last Monday. It means a lot to us that you also believe in our mission to make train travel more accessible.

There was a ton of good news this week, and also some potential bad news for frequent flyers... Let’s get into it.

🚄 €6 billion Spain-Morocco rail plans revived

Building a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar is back on the cards!

Plans for 14-kilometre tunnel were shelved when a study concluded that the sea was too deep (1,000m) at certain points.

A 28 km route has now been proposed, with a maximum depth of 475 metres, which would make it by far the deepest undersea tunnel in the world. To put this in perspective, the Channel Tunnel is only 75 metres deep.

The €6 billion tunnel would facilitate the travel of 12.8 million passengers per year and 13 million tons of goods.

Provided that the seismic and tectonic challenges can be overcome, they are aiming for it to be operational by 2030, when Spain, Portugal & Morocco host the FIFA World Cup.

Imagine.

🇪🇸 Madrid to 🇲🇦 Casablanca in 5.5 hours.

🇫🇷 €1 billion tax on flights

Les Echos

France are planning to raise the tax on flights departing from France. The tax was introduced in 2007, and the proposed changes would see €1 billion be paid by airlines every year.

No doubt this cost burden will be passed on the final customer, but the tax will be mostly target the upper classes, long-haul flights, business aviation and private jets.

Good thing France is so well connected by TGV.
